Newport News Waterworks (NNWW) Custom Application Development & Business Analysis

Newport News Waterworks, owned and operated by the City of Newport News, is the regional water provider for 400,000 people in Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, York County, and James City County. With modern water distribution facilities comes the need for state-of-the-art Information Technology. Marathon has been a partner with Waterworks in providing a variety of IT services, including support for many of the client server legacy applications, application architecture, SQL database support, business analysis, and project management.

Solution

On an application architecture level, when Waterworks was looking for a framework for developing modern applications, utilizing the latest Microsoft technologies, they brought Marathon in to help prototype their Inactive Records Inventory System (IRIS). Marathon’s role was to work side by side with Waterworks’ technical staff, who were previously trained in legacy technologies, to develop a base application that could be used by their staff as a training tool as they made the jump to .NET and SQL development. Marathon, therefore, served as equal part application architect and trainer to the Waterworks technical staff.

Marathon also played a key role by assisting Waterworks with their AMS City Works/Woolpert and Hampton Roads Sanitation District assessment projects by providing business analysis and project management services. Marathon consultants played a strategic role by coordinating efforts with Waterworks staff and vendors alike through the evaluation of legacy and third-party applications, helping clearly define tasks, Oracle and SAP data model analysis, and the assessing interface capabilities with existing Waterworks systems and proposed third-party tools.
