Nonprofit Website Redesign Improves User Experience and Supporter Engagement
Founded in 1896, The King's Daughters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. After establishing Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) in 1961, the organization has remained the hospital's largest supporter through fundraising, volunteerism, leadership, and advocacy. Today, more than 600 volunteers across over 35 community Circles help advance its mission by organizing events, raising funds, and serving the community.

As The King's Daughters has continued to grow its community impact, its website needed to better support the way donors, volunteers, and supporters engage online. Marathon partnered with the organization to redesign and modernize its website with a mobile-first approach, creating a modern digital experience that makes it easier to donate, participate in fundraising events, connect with Community Circles, and manage content—all while providing a scalable platform for future growth.
Challenge
The existing website no longer met the expectations of today's users or the organization's evolving needs. Navigation was confusing—particularly on mobile devices—making it difficult for visitors to find important information, explore fundraising events, and connect with Community Circles. The site's visual design felt dated, key user journeys lacked clarity, and content management workflows required more manual effort than necessary.
The King's Daughters needed a modern, intuitive website that would improve the user experience while providing a flexible content management platform capable of supporting future growth.
Solution
Marathon delivered a complete website redesign focused on usability, accessibility, and long-term scalability. The new mobile-first experience features streamlined navigation, an enhanced mega menu, improved event pages, redesigned Community Circle pages, and intuitive user journeys that make it easier for visitors to engage with the organization.
Behind the scenes, Marathon implemented Umbraco CMS with a flexible drag-and-drop page editing experience that empowers content managers to create and update pages without technical expertise. Reusable content components, responsive previews, customizable layout settings, copy-and-paste functionality, and content preview capabilities enable administrators to efficiently manage the website while maintaining a consistent user experience.
To further improve operational efficiency, Marathon transformed numerous downloadable PDF forms into online web forms with automated submission workflows. Form submissions are routed directly to the appropriate staff members while also being securely stored within the CMS, creating a centralized and more manageable process for record keeping and administration.
Results
The King's Daughters now has a modern, mobile-friendly website that better reflects its mission and provides an improved experience for donors, volunteers, and community members. Visitors can more easily navigate the site, discover fundraising events, connect with Community Circles, and support the organization's initiatives.
